Closed Scotch Distilleries

Although demand for whisky is at a record high, that hasn't always been the case. Much like the global economy, the whisky industry has a history of cyclical highs and lows, and at several points in history, there have been major distillery closures. These distilleries fall into three categories: They remain closed (mothballed) hoping to produce whisky again one day, they have been dismantled/demolished and will never produce whisky again, or, as of recent times, they are being revived/rebuilt.
For obvious reasons, the whiskies produced at these original distilleries are rare and collectable (with associated price tags), as they represent scarce and dwindling liquid from a bygone era.
